About Key Leader
What is Key Leader?
Key Leader is a weekend experiential leadership program for today’s young leaders. This life-changing experience focuses on service leadership as the first and most meaningful stage of leadership development. Key Leaders learn first-hand the most important lesson of leadership – that it comes from helping others succeed.

Personal Growth & Development
The Key Leader program is built on five essential principles.
- Personal Integrity – doing the right thing
- Personal Growth – developing in mind, body, and spirit
- Respect – showing consideration for self, others, and property
- Building Community – developing relationships to achieve positive goals
- Pursuit of Excellence– expecting and achieving the best
These principles reflect our mission to inspire young people to achieve their personal best through service leadership.
Most of all, it’s fun!!

Important Information
What to Expect
Participants begin with a Key Leader Conference. This weekend retreat includes team-building activities, discussions, and large and small group workshops. The leadership skills students will learn during the Key Leader Conference will stay with them and help them change their schools, communities, and the world for the better.
Participants will have the opportunity to explore leadership in a whole new way while also making amazing new friends and enjoying experiences they’ll never forget. The positive and ongoing interaction they’ll have with other Key Leader graduates will offer continuing reinforcement, encouragement, and growth of their newfound leadership skills.
During their time in the Key Leader program, students will develop important social and emotional skills, which will allow them to better understand themselves and develop meaningful connections with others. These skills will help them initiate friendships, calm themselves when angry, resolve relationship conflicts respectfully, and make safe and ethical choices.
5 Core Categories of Emotional and Social Learning That Are Emphasized in the Key Leader Program
-
- Self-Awareness – accurately assessing your own feelings, values, interests, strengths, and abilities and maintaining a well-grounded sense of self-confidence.
- Self-Management – regulating your emotions to appropriately handle stress, persevere in overcoming obstacles, express emotions constructively, and control impulses. Setting personal and academic goals and monitoring your progress towards achieving them.
- Social Awareness – empathizing with others, recognizing and appreciating individual and group similarities and differences, identifying and following social standards of conduct, and recognizing and using school, community, and family resources.
- Relationship Skills – establishing and maintaining healthy, cooperative, and rewarding relationships, preventing, managing, and resolving interpersonal conduct, resisting inappropriate social pressure, and seeking help when needed.
- Responsible Decision Making – making smart decisions based on factors such as ethical standards, safety concerns, respect for others, appropriate standards of conduct, and the likely consequences of various actions.
